All JHS drama students
had the opportunity to submit scripts for
the John Yancy Memorial Scholarship 2009
JHS One Act Festival of Plays. They used
John's last words; "Don't smoke or
EVER do drugs for me" in their 10 minute
play. The Jupiter High drama department
chose 7 out of the 20 scripts submitted
to compete in the festival. The plays were
performed February 14, 2009, in the JHS
Auditorium. Admission was $5 at the door,
with JHS Drama Society supporting our Dollar
for Scholars Champaign, giving back $1 for
each admission. The finalists had a budget
to cast, direct and produce their play.
A panel of judges selected the best performer
for each play and awarded cash prizes to
the top three. Judges: Kathy Green, Kathy
Peterson, Chris Dugger and Donnie Quigley,
were "at rise" for Jupiter High
School drama students to showcase their
talents at the second annual John Yancy
Memorial Scholarship 2009 JHS One Act Festival
of Plays. The audience was impressed by
the student's abilities, not just to act,
but to come up with the words, giving great
insight into the teenage brain and their
thoughts regarding smoking, drugs and alcohol.
Surprisingly enough, the younger "teen"
students were captivated watching their
olde peers perform.
The first place prize of $250 was awarded
to Michael Erasmus, One Step Closer, Second
place , $175 was awarded to Alex Tammaro,
Little Red X. Third place $125, was awarded
to Cami Cupples, Walter Williams with Honorable
Mentions to: Amanda Martinez & Kiley
Kessler, The Promise; Megan Cornwell &
Chandler Reid, Graduation Night; Brigitte
Virgil, The First Time; Samantha McKinlay
& Danica Rockwood, Reasons. All Star
cast awards went to: Kiley Leslar, Chandler
Reid, Sam McGrath, Brittany Gregson, Victoria
Kelper, Michael Miller, and Lance Hobson.
Kathy Green taped the winners for her radio
show on WJTW and Kathy Peterson will be
placing the students on her web site. Many
thanks to Rick Blackwell, of news 12now,
for taping a rehearsal, which aired the
Friday morning before the festival. This
experience was the event of the century
for the JHS Drama Students!
